Cheap Hotel Madrid
Many people think that Madrid is expensive because it’s a capital city. It is not necessarily true. Hotel Ateneo has a privileged position in the city centre, two minutes on foot from Sol, one of the main public transport hubs in Madrid. Hotel Ateneo is in Calle Montera, one of the oldest streets in Madrid, dating back to the 15th century. Montera is a type of hat, and one of the stories about the name of this street says that the king Sancho IV lost his hat there and hence the name. This street also featured in literature, a famous Spanish writer, Valle-Inclán, set one of the scenes of his book “Luces de Bohémia” in what is now the tavern Pica Lagartos.
There is a restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere in Hotel Ateneo, where you can enjoy a nice meal and drinks with your friends. If you prefer going further afield, Gran Vía is just a few metres away. This main artery of the city has a great variety of establishments that cater for all tastes and budgets. If you go towards Plaza de España, you will also find a few cinemas that show movies in their original version.
There are also a few modern cafés that cater for the more international taste, with cappuccinos and Irish coffees on the menu, while old bars offer the more conventional but equally taste café con leche.
